Scotch Whisky Tastings with Ouidram
(Saturday & Sunday)

Join Montreal’s Ouidram for an eye-opening, mouth-watering excursion into the world of Scotch Whisky. With their expert guidance, embark on a wonderful journey into the intriguing world of single malt whiskies born of the moors and the mountains, the mist and the heather, and all that is Scotland.

Ouidram's Brian McQueenie and Theresa McGoldrick have been co-hosting private, corporate and fundraising whisky tastings in Montreal for the past 8 years and are currently carving out a niche in Ontario. They are proud to support An Evening Inspired by Downton Abbey, as it is a good cause and a great way to give back and meet our neighbours to the south.

Downton Abbey’s Real Edwardian Family with Joanna Henderson

(Sunday)

Highclere Castle once housed as interesting a cast of characters as does its Masterpiece alter ego, Downton Abbey.  The saga of the Carnarvon family, along with their servants, was well recorded and is preserved through household records, diaries and many letters and photographs.

This presentation and slide show will look at the actual history of the Carnarvons.  Who were they and how alike or different were their lives from the fictitious Crawleys?  We'll examine the house and the owner's history as it existed during the same time period presented in Downton Abbey.

Joanna Henderson received her undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont, a master's degree from Dartmouth College and an EdD from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. She taught at Wheaton and Babson Colleges before retiring and now teaches American Studies courses in several lifelong-learning programs.  She lives in New London, N.H. This presentation is a condensed version of a course she taught last winter at Colby-Sawyer College.

Tea (& pastry!) and all its splendour
with Raelene Gannon and Chef Christine Frost (Sunday)

Tea and all its splendour embodies Raelene Gannon’s knowledge, passion and ‘taste’ in tea.  The limitless variety of types, blends, flavours and aromas offers ample opportunity for Raelene to develop unique tea combinations not available in the conventional tea bag market.

Raelene will be joined by The Essex’s own executive sous chef Christine Frost, who’ll be offering up delectable pastries to complement your tea experience – making this a Sunday morning stop not to be missed.

Raelene is a certified Tea Sommelier, one of the first 15 in Canada, and truly an expert in all things tea, including countries of origin, ceremonies and, in particular, tea menus and food pairings. Raelene’s passion, creativity and boundless energy will impart to you a unique and flavorful new take on tea. Her upcoming cookbook, tea: from cup to plate, is being released in late 2014.

Chef Frost studied culinary arts at the esteemed Le Cordon Bleu in London before returning to her native Vermont. She honed her craft at The Kitchen Table in Richmond and at Shelburne Farms. Chef Frost thrives on infusing fresh, local ingredients into her creations.

The Costumes of Downton Abbey with Jule Emerson
(Sunday)

Jule Emerson (MFA NYU Tisch) served as Artist-in-Residence/Costume Designer/Professor at Middlebury College from 1990-2014. At the behest of the Vermont Council on the Humanities, Jule has called upon her extensive knowledge of the history of fashion and costume design in creating her highly popular presentation on The Costumes of Downton Abbey. She’ll give you a rich and rewarding look at the real-life fashions that help inspire the costume drama!

Prior to Middlebury, Jule worked professionally as a costume artist for television, feature films, and the New York professional theatre. Jule was awarded the Kennedy Center Medallion “in recognition of her commitment to excellence and conspicuous contributions.”
