Purpose and Mission

Community Cinema is a ground-breaking civic engagement initiative featuring free monthly screenings and community discussions of films from the acclaimed, award-winning series Independent Lens. Free and open to the public, our Community Cinema is held from September to June, focusing on timely social issues of the day.

We work to bring this tremendous content directly into your communities, and build partnerships all across the state to enable all Vermonters to be part of the discussion. Community Cinema is currently available in Burlington at the Fletcher Free Library, Johnson at Johnson State College, Middlebury at the Ilsley Public Library, Montpelier at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Rutland at the Rutland Free Library and St. Johnsbury at Catamount Arts. We are also working to bring this program to Bennington and Brattleboro in the near future.
