Preview & discuss Las Marthas.

Dating from the aftermath of the Spanish-American War, the annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas is unlike any other. Las Marthas follows two Mexican American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their young shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and political tension over immigration.

This event is free and open to the public.

VPT is bringing Community Cinema to your community.  It is currently presented in Burlington at the Fletcher Free Library, Johnson at Johnson State College, Middlebury at the Ilsley Public Library, Montpelier at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Rutland at the Rutland Free Library and St. Johnsbury at Catamount Arts.

Rachel Senechal leads a discussion of the ideas surrounding the film, Las Marthas, which documents the annual cross-border debutante ball of the Martha Washington Society in Laredo Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The general feeling of those present is that we have nothing like that in Vermont. This program was recorded January 15, 2014 in Montpelier, Vermont.
