Points North #707
Vermont so often spawns the dream of a simpler life. Christine and Ray Powers followed the dream and began a cottage-industry baking sour dough bread on Bear Mountain in Wallingford. Inspired by a magazine article about another Vermont couple who chose baking as a way of life, Christine and Ray built a 17th-century French Style wood-fired brick oven and began making hearty and healthy loaves. They've raised a family while tending the oven and are now raising another child in the same manner while providing the surrounding communities with a wholesome bread. Points North visited Bear Mountain Bakers and watched the couple go through their day of making bread and enjoying the simpler and quieter pace of life in Vermont.
Our friends at New Hampshire Public Television profile the "Grazing Power Project" -- an experiment of Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) to use sheep rather than pesticides to clear their transmission line rights-of-way.
A biologist, inventor and distinguished lecturer at UVM, John Todd fulfilled a Buckminster Fuller dream by creating a self-sustaining living environment. He now creates environments that clean up pollution and waste. Named a "hero of the planet" by Time magazine, Todd and his author wife Nancy are remarkable visionaries who discuss the problems and hope for the planet's sustainability.
