Points North #713
In the foothills of Mt. Mansfield near the tiny town of Jericho lies one of Vermont's best kept secrets. It's a place where athletes come from around the world to train and compete in one of winter's little known events. It's a sport that combines speed and endurance with patience and precision. No idea what it is? Well, it's the sport of biathlon.
Are you up on the latest ski-slope acrobatics? Check out the Snow Zone program at Vermont's Killington Ski Area, where the young and the talented use snowboards, ski boards, and twin-tipped skis for all sorts of exciting snow sliding possibilities.
In 1961, Mickey and Ginny Cochran bought an old hillside farm running along the Winooski River in Richmond, Vt. Through a lot of hard work, the Cochrans transformed the land into a family-friendly ski area -- a place where their children and the neighbors could enjoy skiing and race training. The Cochran kids "ruled the slopes" for many years.
Four decades later, Cochran's ski area remains a local legend. Rob Michalak talked with Ginny Cochran about the early years at Cochran, and about its on-going mission to give all kids and families affordable skiing and snowboarding.
