Points North #715
We take a visit to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science and the Vermont Raptor Center in Woodstock, Vt., to learn about the education and rehabilitation programs there. We sit in on a fourth-grade class as they learn about raptors and meet a red-tailed hawk for the first time. We take a walk through the Raptor Center and see its many resident birds of prey, and visit the rehabilitation center where injured and sick birds are cared for.
Twenty years ago, fresh out of UVM Medical School, a young pediatrician moved to Franklin County and began practicing medicine. Today, he is the proud "parent" of a unique high school program in Swanton that delivers quality health care to teenagers.
Created by Dr. "Chip" Chiappinelli, the program gives high school students access to medical care -- and the opportunity to learn about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. What's more, it gives the Doctor a chance to really connect with kids, many of whom he has known since they were infants.
The Walter B. Read Sr. Fire Training Center in Pittsford, Vt., is where volunteer firefighters from around the state come to train. On this particular weekend session, the Rutland Volunteer Fire Department battles a structure fire and talks about what it's like to be a firefighter.
