Building Strong, Vibrant Communities

Host Kristin CarlsonAlthough Vermont has one of the least diverse populations in the country, local communities are coming together to embrace cultural and ethnic differences. Host Kristin Carlson and panelists will explore what is being done and what can be done to strengthen communities.

In addition, viewers will be invited to call in with questions during the program, watch a live webcast, and participate in the online chat. Both the webcast and chat can be accessed at www.vpt.org.

In May and June, VPT and Vermont Children’s Aid Society are sponsoring three screenings of Jeff Farber’s film, “Living On The Fault Line,” followed by a community discussion, led by a panel of experts. Performance: Hand Drumming and Percussion Ensemble Concert

The UVM Hand Drumming students will perform a concert of traditional W. African and Afro-Cuban rhythms on djembe and conga drums. Special guest Dr.Gam from Italy will play reggae compositions accompanied by the drummers. UVM percussion will also perform a repertoire of original compositions on various percussion instruments.

The Blessings of a Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Self-Reliant Children

The popular parenting book by Wendy Mogul draws on the wisdom of the Torah, the Talmud, and important Jewish teachings. Using a framework of nine "blessings," Mogel provides parents with a new set of priorities, helping to ease apprehension while creating a positive feeling about the future. This course is open to all parents regardless of the grade your child is in and is being offered once a month, starting October 14th, ends May 11. Course moderated by family therapist, Bruce Chalmer, PhD.

The White Mountain Huts

The Appalachian Mountain Club's Hut System is a unique institution in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This illustrated lecture explains how the history of the huts reflects the larger issues of American history, but also how the huts and their people have formed a world apart, a mountain society with its own history, traditions, and legends. Professor Allen Koop lectures in the History Department at Dartmouth College, primarily on 20th century European history and on the American health care system.
First Wednesday’s series is a Vermont Humanities Council program.


Children's Day Festival of Japan and China

Activities include kite making, crafts, poetry, and much more. This is a combination of the May Japanese festival Kodomo-No-Hi and the June Chinese festival Guoji Ertong Jie. The purpose of these festivals is to value the personalities of children, consider their happiness, and thank their parents.

New World Festival at Chandler Music Hall

The New World Festival celebrates the Celtic and French Canadian heritage of northern New England through music and dance, as well as the vitality of a small Vermont town. In the midst of a historic village center, five continuous performance stages feature fiddlers, pipers, storytelling and dance. The festival includes children’s activities, crafts and food. Performances take place in all-weather tents, Bethany Church and Chandler Music Hall. Festival profits are used to support programming for youth at Chandler throughout the year.
