Healthy Kids, Smart Kids?
Live with Viewer Call-in

Wed., Aug. 23, 8 pm

Host Kristin CarlsonThis VPT Public Square special looks at the relationship between health and learning for Vermont's schoolchildren, featuring the Coordinated School Health approach.

The Vermont Department of Education and the Vermont Department of Health are encouraging communities to integrate health — nutrition, exercise and healthy behaviors — into the academic fabric of their schools, in order to benefit the well-being and learning of their students. Efforts at Barre Town School, Putney Central School, Harwood Union High School and Camel's Hump Middle School to implement Coordinated School Health will be featured in a video report.

Educators and health professionals will join program host Kristin Carlson to discuss how communities can get involved in helping schoolchildren lead healthier lives. Panelists are:
  • Mimi Benedict, project director of Coordinated School Health, VT Dept. of Health;
  • Lynda Van Kleek, health education coordinator, VT Dept. of Education; and
  • Ned Kirsch, principal of Essex Middle School.
Viewers are encouraged to call in with questions. A toll-free number will be announced during the program.
