This
VPT Public Square special looks at Advance Directives, the written documents
a person prepares about choices regarding medical care and treatment in
the event of a serious illness.
A panel of experts join host Bridget Barry Caswell to explore the medical,
legal and ethical implications that hang in the balance between modern,
life-sustaining technology and personal choice. The program also features
a video about a Vermont couple who have an Advance Directive in place and
have recently had to utilize it.
The panelists include:
- Zail S. Berry, MD, Physician specializing in palliative medicine and
geriatrics
- John Campbell, Executive Director, Vermont Ethics Network
- Wendy Morgan, Chief of the Public Protection Division, Vermont Attorney
General's Office

is a booklet about making choices for your medical care in the age of
modern technology. It covers your rights as a patient, common treatment
in critical and end-of-life care, and Advance Directives.

You Must Make Medical Decisions for Someone Else
This publication of the Vermont Ethics Network focuses on the role and
concerns of the family member, health care agency (proxy) or guardian
when confronted with the responsibility of making decisions at the bedside.
Resources include a listing of probate courts and several key publications
that may help decision-makers understand the issues and treatments involved.
