Trophy Trout
In 1994, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department began stocking select river sections with large, 2-year-old trophy trout. At first, skeptics worried that these big hatchery trout would not provide a quality fishery, and that the money would be better spent improving habitat for wild fish. Well, the proof is in the putting to the test, and it did not take long for the Trophy Trout Program to win over even non-believers. Over the last 15 years, it's become extremely popular, and for good reason: if you hit a trophy water just right, you're in for some of the most exciting fishing Vermont has to offer.
Important Bird Areas
Lake Champlain is home to hundreds of bird species that depend on its islands, wetlands, bottomland forests, and nearby fields for everything from food to nesting habitat. Within this diverse ecosystem there are a few truly unique locations designated as “Important Bird Areas” or IBA’s. The National Audubon Society's Important Bird Area program is part of a global effort to identify critical sites for birds across the planet. One of these sites encompasses 4 islands in northeastern Lake Champlain that are used by common terns for nesting. These islands are home to the largest inland population of terns in New England. A tern research project paid for in part by the Vermont Non-game Wildlife Fund is the focus of this segment, which was produced by Audubon Vermont and Peregrine Productions.
Becoming an Outdoor Family
Since 1997, Groton State Forest has hosted Vermont’s Becoming an Outdoor Family workshop. For three days each spring, this annual event gives families the opportunity to camp, enjoy the park, and learn outdoor skills. More than 40 different hands-on classes are offered during the weekend. They showcase the wide variety of outdoor activities available to Vermonters, and help instill a basic understanding of environmental conservation. The only thing better than spending time outdoors, is spending time outdoors with your family.
