He was 54, the former Silent Screen megstar tramp recovering from a breakdown after being accused of communism. She was just 18, the daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill, who objected strongly to their relationship. After three disastrous marriages and a succession of love affairs, Charlie Chaplin had found happiness at last. They moved to Switzerland and had eight children.
