After Goering, Hess was the most senior Nazi in Allied hands: the Fuhrer's deputy. While imprisoned, Hess' behavior became increasingly erratic. He arrived at Nuremberg with serious doubts hanging over his fitness to stand grial and drove his interrogators to exasperation by claiming not to remember his Nazi past.
