PBS Ready to Learn (RTL) is public television's contribution toward the goal of ensuring that all children begin school ready to learn.

VPT sponsors Vermont's participation in RTL by airing a daily schedule of non-violent, commercial-free educational children's television programming for preschoolers. VPT also provides RTL workshops around the state to parents, childcare providers and early childhood educators on a variety of topics including technology, nature and healthy eating.

Ready to Learn workshops are designed to provide parents, caregivers, and teachers with skills and resources to support children's development and educational growth. Workshops are provided free of charge, and participants receive two quality children's books each. These workshops can be one to four hours in length.

VPT currently offers the following RTL workshops:

    • Buzz, Tweet, Trickle, Whoosh: Experiencing Nature With Children
The outdoors is tangible and a relevant way for young children to learn about the world. Participants in this workshop will look at ways to turn a walk into a learning opportunity. Explore the basics, design scavenger hunts, and explore ways to bring nature inside.
    • Just One More Minute! Exploring The Use of Technology With Young Children
Television, game systems, and computers are tools used by the majority of children today. This workshop examines the ways to use technology as effective educational tools. We will explore the amount of television children watch, the types of programs they watch and the ways they watch. Children can be encouraged to think about how TV programs and websites are constructed instead of accepting what they see at face value. Participants will leave with strategies for evaluating and using technology. Participants will also gain ideas for extending television through View, Do and Read.
    • Playthings With A Purpose
Do you remember marbles and Chinese jump ropes? This workshop begins with a discussion of the history of toys. From there, participants will experience a variety of traditional toys and their value. Included in the discussion will be topics such as: gender based toys, storage, and traditional toy suppliers.
    • Roots and Wings: Giving Children A Foundation And Freedom
Raising strong, independent children begins with a solid foundation while allowing children to develop skills to interact with the world. This workshop gives background information about self esteem and practical ideas on providing a base for which children can fly! Suggestions for interacting with stressful situations included. Interactive experiences and discussion will raise awareness and give adults ideas on encouraging a healthy self esteem.
    • VPT 1,2,3
This workshop will address beginning math concepts and everyday activities that encourage mathematical thinking in young children. It will include an idea exchange and hands on activities to increase your mathematic repertoire.
    • You Want Me To Eat That? Creating A Healthy Attitude About Food
Do you have picky eaters? Is mealtime a struggle? This workshop focuses on ways adults can help children make healthy food choices. Discussions will include: mealtime routines, trying new things, and “sneaking in” the vegetables. Bring recipes to share and receive a cookbook and a children’s book about food.
