Rx
for Survival: A Global Health Challenge is a national initiative
examining a major global crisis: Global Health.
In recent decades, the pace toward better global health has been slow as
diseases such as AIDS and new microbial resistance to modern drugs devastate
large populations and make local diseases a global threat.
As a pioneering multimedia project, Rx
for Survival raises awareness about pressing global health
issues, creates a forum for a national dialogue on the role of the United
States and its citizens in addressing these global health issues, and provides
a venue for action by civil society.
| The
cornerstone of the project is a
six-part television series presented by WGBH and Vulcan Production
Inc., which tells the story of struggle and survival
by individuals and communities worldwide. |
This unprecedented,
national project brings together media and educational coverage from PBS,
TIME Magazine and NPR, as well as a book by Phil Hilts, Rx
for Survival: Why We Must Rise to the Global Health Challenge, published
by Penguin Press.
The Rx for Survival project has two goals: Awareness and Action.
The Awareness component educates Americans on the importance and
urgency of global health issues and solutions.
The Action component is a national outreach campaign, Rx
for Child Survival, which focuses on children's health issues
and how Americans can help. The campaign provides tools for speaking out,
volunteering time and donating to programs that make a difference for children.
Every
child deserves a chance at good health, yet worldwide more than 10 million
children under the age of five die each year. Many of these deaths are preventable
by providing inexpensive but life-saving interventions, including antibiotics
to fight pneumonia and other illnesses; insecticide-treated netting to protect
against mosquitoes; oral hydration to prevent diarrhea-related deaths; vaccinations
and vitamin A; and micronutrients.
Rx
for Child Survival brings together international humanitarian
organizations like CARE, Save the Children, UNICEF and the Global Health
Council to offer Americans the opportunity to help children around the world
live longer and healthier lives.
As a part of the Rx
for Child Survival
outreach campaign, Vermont Public Television (VPT) is one of 20 PBS affiliates
around the nation that is implementing a local campaign.
In conjunction with its community partners, VPT will host various educational
activities, events and programming (see the Calendar)
that offer information about global health issues and most importantly
direct ways to take action by bridging and connecting local challenges
to the global ones.
