VPT Field Trip to the
Vermont Supreme Court

VPT's televised field trip for Vermont students provides an in-depth look at the workings of the Vermont Supreme Court, and at the justices who keep it running. We even see students arguing an actual court case, based on the Lost Property State Statutes with the involvement of the justices.

A Glossary of Terms is available for teachers and students who would like to familiarize themselves with the terms of the court.

    Student Learning Points
Students will be exposed to the following areas of importance:
  • The differences between trial court and the Supreme Court.
  • The principles involved in an appeal process.
  • The importance of ruling on issues of law rather than issues of fact.
  • How arguments are made by an attorney.
  • The sources of law that judges use when rendering decisions.
The program is funded by USDA, Rural Development.
