Memorial Day

Vermont's late arrival of spring offers a poignant backdrop for one of America's most hallowed celebrations – Memorial Day. As we welcome the season of rebirth, we honor those who dedicated their lives in military service to our nation.

Originally established after the Civil War as Decoration Day and assigned to May 30, Memorial Day is now a federal holiday, observed the last Monday of the month – this year on May 28. It's a time to visit cemeteries and other memorial sites, fly the U.S. flag at half-staff and attend a community parade or family gathering. It's also a time to celebrate the legacy of freedom for which so many have made the ultimate sacrifice.
