Originally established after the Civil War as Decoration Day and assigned to May 30, Memorial Day is now a federal holiday, observed the last Monday of the month this year on May 28. It's a time to visit cemeteries and other memorial sites, fly the U.S. flag at half-staff and attend a community parade or family gathering. It's also a time to celebrate the legacy of freedom for which so many have made the ultimate sacrifice.
